 City Palace Complex: Offbeat Views

To access another part of the Palace, you will need to pay a 50 Rupee separate entry fee inside the City Palace Complex. I asked guards about the view from the other side and was told by them that there was nothing there. I shouldn't waste my money.

It was instinct that led me to take the ticket and explore the city. In retrospect, it was a great decision. You can visit with Udaipur taxi Services both the Palaces and Heritage Hotels on one ticket.

You can access the area where Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel is located, Jag Mandir Island Crystal Gallery & Durbar Hall, and The Sunset Terrace Restaurant. The ticket costs fifty rupees. Crystal Gallery houses one of the most impressive collections of crystal objects, including crystal chairs. However, entry costs 500 Rupees. Photography is not allowed inside. You can combine a visit to both the Crystal Gallery or Durbar Hall if you aren't too concerned about the no-photo rule.

Sunset Gazing at Sajjangarh Palace

It is a great idea to visit the Monsoon Palace and Sajjangarh Fort in the afternoon, then take in the stunning views until the sun sets.

Ahar Government Museum

Ahar, located approximately 3-4 kilometers from Udaipur's main city, is a small hamlet which seems to have its own time and place. Ahart's streets are quiet and peaceful. There are no shops selling musical paraphernalia or lanes that lead to tourists. It is believed that the village was once home to an ancient royal family. There are many ancient ruins scattered throughout Ahar.

It is a wonderful surprise to discover the Government Museum at Ahar. The building is quite plain and it can be easily mistaken for being closed. The rich history of Udaipur, and its surrounding areas, is evident once you step inside. This building is large and contains a treasure trove of artifacts.

Some interesting facts about the museum:

Ahar culture was characterized by its diverse pottery, houses and copper objects. Terracotta figurines and clay beads were also common.

It is believed that the Harappans are second in town planning after the Ahar culture.

Aharians cultivated wheat, barley and rice as well as millet. They also grew green and black gram.

Ahar culture is approximately. 2000-3500 years old.

The Ahar Museum houses a wealth of stone idols dating back to the 7th through 15th centuries AD.

Ahar Cenotaphs
Ahar Cenotaphs is a large collection of chatris (cenotaphs), of rulers. When you reach Ahar village, it is on the left hand side of the road just before the Government Museum. The complex contains more than 300 cenotaphs. After walking around the perimeter wall, I was surprised to find no entry to the Ahar Cenotaphs complex.

On my return, I noticed that the door was open. I quietly entered the building and was asked by the caretaker for money if I wanted any photos. I had already taken the photos so he asked me if I wanted to take more. The cenotaphs, which are made in white, make a beautiful picture with the evening colors.

Vintage & Classic Car Collection Museum
The entry fee to the Vintage & Classic Car Collection Museum was very high (Rs. It was worth the entry fee of Rs. 300 for the Vintage & Classic Car Collection Museum. You will find 18-20 vintage cars in various garages, each with a signboard that details their make, year, and engine specifications.

There are elegant looking horse carriages that date back to earlier times. Other vintage cars you should not miss are the Rolls Royce Phantom, which is featured in Octopussy and the Cadillac Convertible, which was used by Queen Elizabeth during her 1961 visit to India. You will also find solar-powered cycles and other interesting modes of transportation in a separate enclosure.

Street Art in Udaipur

Colourful street art is a common feature in almost all tourist spots. Because it beautifies the streets and gives life to otherwise boring walls, street art is becoming very popular.

If you are interested in exploring the one way cab from Udaipur street art scene, I recommend walking to all of the old parts of the city. You can find affordable guest houses and hostels for backpackers that have great graffiti and messages. The Instagram generation is full of colourful street art that makes for a great photo-op.

Arts & Crafts Shilpgram
Although I wrote about Shilpgram in my previous post on Udaipur there are so many more experiences that can be had. As we walked aimlessly, trying to find our way around, our eyes saw a magician demonstrating his talents. It was a wonderful experience and not expensive!
